Polyeco group in a JV with Tredi relieved Ethiopia from 450 tons of hazardous obsolete pesticides with the help of the World Bank. The safeguarding and disposal of obsolete pesticides and other associated hazardous chemicals was crucial for Ethiopia in order to meet its targets according to its National Implementation Plan for the Stockholm convention.
The project of repackaging, transportation and disposal of obsolete pesticides and associated waste in Ethiopia was awarded to the JV by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA). The project was implemented in the context of the country’s participation in The Africa Stockpiles Programme (ASP) coordinated by MoA and funded by the World Bank.
The products and services provided under this project were :
- The provision of specialized equipment and consumables for the collection, repackaging, labelling and transportation of the waste.
- The packaging and seggregation operations in the warehouses of the Ministry of Health in Addis Ababa and in Mekele.
- The exportation of the waste in accordance with the Basel Convention.
- The final disposal of the waste in high temperature incineration plants in Sweden and France.
