Following an international tendering procedure, Polyeco Group has been awarded a contract for the management of a large POPs pesticides stockpile in Turkey. The project is part of a GEF financed Project entitled “Turkey GEF POPs Legacy Elimination and POPs Release Reduction Project” being undertaken in Turkey with United Nations Development Programme acting as the lead GEF Implementing Agency, and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (MoEU) of Turkey acting as the national Executing Agency.
The project aims at the environmentally sound removal, packaging, transport, storage and disposal of POPs pesticides and POPs impacted waste from the Merkim warehouse site in Kocaeli, Turkey, consisting of approx. 1,700 tons of HCH and high POPs content associated waste. Final disposal will be conducted in licensed hazardous waste incineration facilities, in compliance with the Basel Convention and EU Regulations.
The project shall contribute to the fulfillment of Turkey’s targets in the context of the Stockholm Convention.
