Following an international tendering procedure, Polyeco Group has been awarded a contract for the management of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) equipment and waste in Turkey. The project is part of a GEF financed Project entitled “GEF POPs Elimination Reduction and POPs Release Reduction Project” being undertaken in Turkey with United Nations Development Programme acting as the lead GEF Implementing Agency, and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (MoEU) of Turkey acting as the national Executing Agency.
The agreement was signed in January 2018, between Polyeco Group and the United Nations Development Programme Turkey, at UNDP headquarters in Ankara.
The project aims at the sustainable disposal of approximately 280 tons of stockpiled out-of-service equipment containing PCBs owned by 4 Industries in İzmit, Zonguldak, İstanbul and Hatay Provinces in Turkey. Tasks include environmentally sound removal, drainage, dismantling, packaging, transport, storage and disposal of the PCB waste. Final disposal will be conducted in licensed hazardous waste facilities in the EU, in compliance with the Basel Convention and EU Regulations.
The project shall contribute to the fulfillment of Turkey’s targets in the context of the Stockholm Convention.
