Polyeco Group has been awarded a contract for the management of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contaminated equipment and waste in the Caribbean. The project is being implemented jointly by the Ministries of the four involved countries, Barbados, Antigua & Barbuda, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago. Administrative support to the project is provided through the FAO Sub regional Office and Technical support is provided through the FAO Lead Technical Unit.
The project aims at the environmentally sound disposal of approximately 75 tons of PCB contaminated oil, electrical equipment and solid waste owned by the public sector. Tasks include collection, packaging, transport, storage and disposal of the PCB waste. Final disposal will be conducted in licensed hazardous waste facilities in EU, in compliance with the Basel Convention and EU Regulations.
The project shall contribute to the fulfillment of the Caribbean countries’ targets in the context of the Stockholm Convention.
